There are two fabulous museums located in near by Salamanca, New York. The Salamanca Rail museum is a non-profit that is operated through volunteer hours and donations. The Seneca Iroquois National Museum is a wonder museum that has collections of cultural art and historical pieces. Both museums are a great way to learn about the historical culture in Salamanca and Cattaragus County New York.
Salamanca Rail Museum
Salamanca Rail Museum is just 20 minutes away in Salamanca, New York. This is a fun trip for the entire family, not just train enthusiast. The historical pieces and the architectural design of the station will surely impress the family. Walk through the rail cars, explore the station, view the working “N scale” train setup and more. Stan Carlson works at the museum and is a walking encyclopedia of the rail system in western New York. He paints a picture of life when the trains and artifacts were in use, literally and figuratively. Stan has stories of the days when he worked the lines and his grandfather worked out of the Ellicottville station when it was in service. He is also and artist and has painted pictures of life on the rail; which are on display. Seneca Iroquois National Museum
The Seneca Iroquois National Museum is also located in Salamanca, NY, just 20 minutes away. This museum offers year-round exhibits, cultural art and many collections. The cultural art and collections include Seneca beadwork, Seneca baskets, photos, artwork, log homes and more. There are seasonal exhibits as well as permanent exhibits that include “This is Where We Walk”, “Histories Mysteries” and the “Longhouse” exhibits. Visit their website for more information.

Allegany NY State Park - Red House and Quaker Run
The Allegany State Park is 20 minutes away near Salamanca. The park has over 65,000 acres of trails, waterways and nature. Pack a picnic, sit at the lake beach, hike, mountain bike, play mini-golf, play tennis, rent a boat or canoe in the Red House area. Stop by Quaker lake and the hiking trails in Quaker run. Park maps are available at the gate and there is a daily entrance fee during posted times. In the winter, the park grooms cross-country ski trails, blazes snow shoe trails and maintains 90 miles of snowmobile trails. Cross-country ski and bike rentals are available at the administration building and other areas. Check out the Stone Tower and Thunder Rocks! Trout are stocked for spring fishing!
The Art Roscoe Cross country ski area and mountain bike trails is a great area to hike and mountain bike in the summer and cross country ski and snowshoe in the winter. The area is located in the Red House section and has 8 blazed trails the range from moderate to difficult. You can also climb up the old fire tower built in 1926. There were 3 towers in the park used to lookout for forest fires. There is a great histgorical marker that explains the history of the fire towers.
The Red House area of the New York State Park has over 5 miles of paved trails, and countless miles of single track trials to explore. The park also represents one of the largest contiguous areas of publicly accessible wild and stocked trout fishing in the state and has the largest concentration of wild brook trout streams in western New York. Activities are year-round. Many of the mountain bike trails are used for hiking, show shoeing and cross-country skiing. There are additional blazed hiking only trails. The park map can be obtained at the entrance gate or the Administration building. There are activities for everyone, including mini-golf, fishing, hiking, biking, picnics, tennis, baseball and more. Two scenic areas are the Thunder Rocks and the Stone Tower. During the summer months and weekends in the off season between 9 am to 4 pm there is a $6 or $7 charge. The park is open until dusk, so in the past there was no entrance charge outside those hours.
The Administration building is a central place to get information once in the park. The administration offices and park information area has many of the activity maps as well as posted information. Bicycles, cross country skis, snow shoe rentals are availabe from the building. Finally, the gift shop and natural history museum are located in this historic tudor style building.
The miniature golf course is located on the southside of Red House Lake. The 18 hole course is fund and has many challenging hole. Being next to Red House lake, there are some great views as well. Just follow the road out from the Administration building and the course is next to the Boat house on the lake.
The Boat house has paddle boats available for rent as well as a snack shop. Take the paddle boats out on the lake for some great water views, exercise and get out on the water. There is a charge for miniture golf and boat rental, but they are inexpensive and fun activities in the park.
The Quaker run area has two lakes. The Quaker lake has beautiful areas for hiking and picnicing as well as a beach area with playground, beach house, events, ice cream house and more. Rent Kayaks or paddle boats or play some sand volleyball. The park has planned events throughout the summer!
The Science lake has two fishing piers. The park represents one of the largest contiguous areas of publicly accessible wild and stocked trout fishing in the state and has the largest concentration of wild brook trout streams in western New York.The park has mixed hemlock /hardwood forest, mountains, rolling hills and meadows, streams, ponds and lakes attract devoted outdoors enthusiasts year-round. Quaker lake is a larger scenic lake located on the western side of the park, while Science like is smaller and located on the eastern side of the park.
You can also access Friend's Boat lauch to lauch your boats into the Allegany reseviour. There is also a museum in the Quaker Store, Bear Caves, Thunder Rocks and the Mount Tuscarora Fire Tower. Many programs are offered at the Quaker ampatheter throughout the prime season. Trail maps can be obtained at the Quaker Store, the entrance gate or the Administration building in the Red House area.
The old Quaker store has been completely restored and now houses a park museum with exhibits documenting the history of Allegany State Park as "The wilderness Playground of Western New York". The store also had information to orient visitors to the parks unique features and attractions, both past and present.

Griffis Sculpture Park
Over 250 art sculptures are located in the 400 acre park. Pack a picnic, hike on the trails and drive through one of America’s oldest sculpture parks. The park has two areas, Milly Valley Road and Rhor Hill Site. The Rohr Hill area is characterized by towering sculptures set in fields and the woods just down the filed near the parking area. The Mill Valley Road Site has sculptures in a flat area around a pond, and miles of trails through a variety of terrain.
There is a $3 admission for senior and students, $5 for adults and children under 12 are free. The park is open May through October. This is an excellent day trip.
They also have special events with a separate fee schedule. In the summer, they brought back the Summer Arts Fesitval, with music, art and more. In the fall, they offer the Night Lights exhibit, where the art sculptures and trees are illumanated with colorful lights. In Feburary, they usually have a guided snowshoe event at the park.
To get to the park, take 219 North to Ashford Hollow (speed limit 45). Stay straight Approx. 2.7 miles to County Road 75 (Mill Valley Rd.). Turn LEFT and go 1.5 miles to Park entrance (on left).

Little Rock City
Little Rock City is located about 10 minutes away in the New York State Forest, which has public access. The areas in the NY State forest have maintenance roads to access the various areas. Little Rock City is unique, with the large outcropping of enormous rocks and boulders. This area is great for hiking, with two blazed trails (white and pink). The trails go through the forest, between boulders and along ridges. After a day of exploring, pack a picnic to eat on the picnic benches located near the parking area. The area and access roads do not have street lights, so make sure that you expore during daylight!
To get to the forest trails from downtown Ellicottville take 242 West for approximately 2 miles and turn left on to Whig street. Take the right fork in the road and drive 1.2 miles. Veer right on to Mutton Hollow Road and drive 0.7 mile. At the intersection, there will be a small country church on your right. Turn left on to Hungry Hollow Road and drive 1.1 miles. Turn right on Little Rock City Forest Road. Approximately 0.25 mile, you will see a single track trail head for hiking or mountain biking. If you are heading to the picnic area, boulders and additional trail heads, stay on the road for a total of 1.9 miles. At the end you will run into the picnic areas and trail head. The large boulders are in this area on the left.

H and L Enterprises is based near the Chautauqua Institution, they offer unmatched access to breathtaking landscapes and natural attractions of western New York, the Southern Tier, northwestern Pennsylvania, and eastern Ohio. They are about 45 minutes from Ellicottville. You can contact the company for available tour packages and information is available on their website.
H and L Enterprises does have helicopter rides in Ellicottville for Fall Festival weekend and in Pumpkinville on October weekends (weather permitting). Their prices are reasonable at these events since they are per person and are for short flights, usually less than 30 minutes. If you are at these events, it is a reasonable way to catch a fabulous view fall mountain colors.
Moore's Maple Shack
Moore's Maple Shack is a maple syrup farm located in Freedom, New York which is about 45 minutes away from Ellicottville. Stop in year round for maple syrup in all size containers up to 1 gallon. They also have other products in their store. See website for open days and hours.
Maple Weekends are usually the last 3 in March from 10 am to 6 pm. Enjoy a 20– 30 minute FREE wagon rides trough the maple woods 10 am to 3 pm. Learn about the syrup process.
The Pancake House has all-you-can-eat buttermilk pancakes and additional breakfast menu! The Pancake House is open Sundays in January and February. From March 1st to mid-April, they are open Tuesday through Friday 9 AM to 6 PM and Saturday and Sundays from 8 AM to 6 PM. We recommend calling ahead when you make the trip! It does not get much better then hot pancakes with real New York maple syrup!
Moore's Maple Shack also has a store in the Pumpkinville Village (15 minutes away), which is open in September and October annually. They have most of their products available, including fresh New York Maple Syrup made on their farm. They also have maple candies, maple cotton candy and soo much more! Adventure Day Trips - 1 hour away
The hills of Ellicottville are a great place to enjoy the mountains and rolling hills of Western New York. The hills come alive in the fall with amazing color. The trips have scenic drives and have fun destinations points, beautiful mountain scenery and plenty of places to see along the way. These excursions trips are a little farther away, but can be a great extension of your trip!
Some great day excursions from Ellicottville allow you to explore some magnificent splendors of nature in western New York . There are waterfall, rivers, trails, parks, rafting an more. Take a day trip to Niagara Falls, the “grand canyon of the east” at Letchworth State Park or the gorge trails, visit the Lake Erie Wine Regions or grab a pint at the Southern Tier Brewery.
Southern Tier Brewing Company
Southern Tier Brewery is about 45 minutes away in Lakewood, NY. The local brewery is know for its India Pale Ales (IPAs), but they have other beer styles too. You can find limited releases on tap, that are only available at the brewery. The brewery also carries a great slection of wines!
They have great food, brewery tours and live music out back in their amphitheater and beer garden. If you are up for something new, take a try at their Stones Course.
Stones Course: Stones is a ball sport belonging to the boules sport family. Similar to bocce or lawn bowling, it follows the basic gameplay of these games in which players from two teams take turns throwing their balls (or stones) in an attempt to have them rest closest to the smaller target ball, but that is the end of their similarities. What makes Stones unique is its playing surface, its course obstacles, its boundaries, its equipment, the way a winner is determined, and as a result of all this, the overall strategy.

Niagara Falls is just over 1 hour away and is spectacular for all angles. You can see the falls from below on the Maid of the Mist boat trip or take an adventure on the Whirlpool Jet Boats in the Niagara Gorge rapids and “Devils Hole”.

Letchworth State Park is 1 hour away and has 3 spectacular waterfalls, many hiking trails and guided rafting tours. You can also take the a hot air balloon ride over the canyou.
